Why book a visit from John?
There are lots of reasons to invite John to come and visit your school:
- “Fantastic… a wonderful inspiration. There really is no substitute for this sort of experience” - Deputy Head, Berkshire
“It’s not easy to hold the attention of our children but John managed it magnificently” - Deputy Head at a school for children with social, emotional, behavioural & learning difficulties, Gloucestershire
“I didn’t want him to stop, it was such fun!” - Year 3 pupil
- “The perfect mix of entertainment and inspiration!” - Literacy coordinator, Shropshire
“It made me want to read the books straight away. I’m reading one now” - Year 3 pupil
“He made me think that writing is fun and I could do it” - Year 2 pupil
“It gave me more courage with my own writing” - Year 5 pupil
and you'll find the effects lasting well after the visit.
“Interest in the art of writing… as well as the pure pleasure of reading AND being read to, has increased ten-fold” - Literacy co-ordinator, Gloucestershire
"I was talking to the mother of a child [who] has been kept behind a year because of various academic issues. The mother told me that since he met you, he hasn't stopped writing poetry... He now reads because he wants to and for pleasure. How fantastic is that!" - Teacher, Gloucestershire
- “My little girl told me the story she had heard from the author and talked about it all afternoon. She loved it!” - parent of Nursery pupil
“I’ve programmed the Glasgow’s West End Festival for nine years now and prior to that worked for many years as a children’s bookseller. I can say that John is one of the very best authors for schools we’ve had and certainly at the front rank of authors that I’d recommend for both schools and festival events” - Teresa Lowe
"Amazing... without a doubt one of the best author events that I have experienced"-Tamara McFarlane, Tales on Moon Lane Children's Bookshop, London
- "I used to hate English, now I love it. I didn't like writing, but after meeting John Dougherty I want to be a writer" - Year 6 pupil, Surrey
"A passionate advocate for the power of stories and very funny too." - Carnegie-nominated author CHRISTOPHER EDGE
And don't forget - when you book John, you're not just getting a critically-acclaimed writer of ridiculously funny books for children. You're getting a performing songwriter, a poet, and a former teacher with all the skills necessary to have a hall full of kids helpless with laughter one minute, and ready to leave the hall quietly and sensibly the next.
“A natural entertainer, with a guitar-strumming comedy routine that would go down well on kids’ TV” - Stroud News & Journal
"A John Dougherty session is such fun that his young audiences - big or small - might not realise just quite how much they're learning." - Roald Dahl Funny Prize-winning author PHILIP ARDAGH
John entertains an audience of 1,700 children and teachers at the 2017 Hay Festival. The session was also live-streamed to 900 primary schools in Wales.
"In an age where all-things electronic are vying for children's attention, John Dougherty is a wonderful ambassador for books. His events are as loud and colourful as his shirts. They're packed with humour and music - he plays a mean guitar - and he clearly illustrates (not with a pen, thank heavens) the joys of reading and writing. A John Dougherty session is such fun that his young audiences - big or small - might not realise just quite how much they're learning." - PHILIP ARDAGH
Visits normally include the following:
*These timings are approximate and normally represent minimum session length - the more flexibility the timetable has, the more likely I am to go on a bit longer!
At no additional charge, one of the following extras may be added to the standard format where timetabling permits:
Use this form to make enquiries or book a visit!
As well as the standard format, I can offer the following:
Since the publication of Dinosaurs & Dinner-Ladies, I've branched out into poetry visits! They're much like the standard visit, but with the emphasis firmly on poetry. Let me know what topics you're studying during the term, and I'll try to find some poems to match, if I can!
Like the standard format, a poetry visit will involve both music and laughter!
If you'd like me to come to your school and run writing workshops, I can do that! Please email to discuss your needs. A whole-school assembly can usually be added to a workshop visit at no extra cost.
If you'd like something different, please let me know. I can mix and match poetry and story sessions, Shakespeare and/or Greek Legend sessions, workshops, and perhaps even something brand new just for you.
