John Dougherty

                           Author, poet, songwriter

In June 2004, John took part in a series of workshops in schools funded by the Arts Council and organised by Avalanche magazine, a new project aiming to publish today's best work by tomorrow's writers. Here's what the editor, Kate Pemberton, had to say:

“John Dougherty's story writing workshops have been a joy to watch. The children respond extremely well to him, whether they are listening to his readings, asking questions about what it is to be a writer, joining in the brainstorming sessions, or writing and sharing their own work.

"He controls the group with ease, ensuring everyone is engaged and on task at all times. He gives the children just the right amount of input and structure to enable them to write original stories with confidence. Every child seems to have had an enjoyable and productive time in these workshops - and many have really surprised themselves with what they have written.”
